The POI tool (F) places points of interest: towns, castles, dungeons, ruins and other places your players can visit. Types with a lock in the palette need Pro.
The palette
Selecting the tool opens the POI palette in the sidebar, or in a sheet at the bottom of the screen on a phone. Search by name, open a group, or star a type to keep it in the Fav row. Show all themes lists the other theme’s types as well. How the palette is organised, and where favourites are kept, is in POI icons, names and favourites.
With the POI tool selected, middle-click a POI on the map to pick its type. On a phone or tablet, tap the eyedropper below the search box, then tap a POI.
Place one
Pick a type, then click a hex, or tap it on a touch screen, and type a name in the box that opens. Enter keeps the name; Escape drops the name but keeps the POI. A POI does not need painted terrain underneath it.
To scatter the same type over several hexes, drag across empty hexes instead. Each hex gets one, and none of them asks for a name.
The POI’s icon takes the place of the terrain icon on that hex; the terrain colour stays.
Move, rename or remove
- Move: drag the POI to another hex. Its name moves with it.
- Menu: right-click the POI, or press and hold it on a touch screen, for Rename, Remove POI and a Label Size slider.
- Rename: you can also click the POI with no type selected, or with its own type selected.
Be careful when a different type is selected: clicking an existing POI replaces it with the selected type. Undo (Ctrl + Z, or Cmd + Z on a Mac) puts the old one back.
The Eraser does not remove POIs. Use Remove POI in the menu.
Names on the map
A name can be up to 50 characters long. The map shows the first 20, and pointing the mouse at a shortened name shows all of it. Where names crowd together, some are hidden to keep the map readable. If a name you typed does not show, open the POI’s menu: it says why and lets you make the name larger. See why a name is missing.
Linked pairs
Types marked with a small purple diamond in the palette, such as caves, mines and portals, come in pairs. After you place the first, a banner asks for the second and, where it matters, says whether it goes on the same layer or a different one. Cancel in the banner, or Escape, removes the first one again. Caves, mines and dungeon entrances link to a different layer, and layers need Pro. Once a pair is linked, neither end can be dragged to another hex.
Who can see them
Players you share the map with do not always see every POI. The fog on the hex decides; see who sees which point of interest.
The POI tool is hidden in the Point view. Switch to Hex or Combined to use it.
