The Select tool

Basics

The Select tool (S) picks out a group of hexes so you can copy, move or delete everything on them at once. It is free, and it works in the Hex and Combined views.

Select hexes

Drag over hexes as if you were painting. Every stroke adds to the selection. Hold Alt (Option on a Mac) while you drag to take hexes out again. On a touch screen, switch the panel to Remove instead, and back to Add when you are done. , and . change the brush size, as for terrain.

Select all selects every hex on the layer and scale level you are looking at, and Invert swaps selected and unselected hexes. Esc or Deselect clears the selection. Switching layer or scale level clears it too.

Copy, cut and delete

Copy (Ctrl + C; on a Mac, use Cmd wherever this page says Ctrl) takes the terrain of each hex, including its walls and any custom colour or icon, plus the POIs, notes and tokens on it, every path that lies fully inside the selection, and the connections between two selected hexes. Regions, fog, other connections and the party marker stay behind.

Only terrain painted on that level is copied. A detail-level hex that shows the terrain of the larger hex it sits in, or unpainted Underdark rock, copies as empty ground.

Cut (Ctrl + X) copies and then deletes. Delete (Delete or Backspace) removes the same things without copying them. Deleting clears the terrain the way the Eraser does, so the hexes keep their fog.

Cut and Delete also remove the hexes’ connections, at both ends. When you paste after a cut, the connections between two of the cut hexes come back, so moving an area keeps the stairs and portals inside it. A connection that led out of the area or to another layer stays removed; link it again with the Connection tool.

Paste

Press Ctrl + V or click Paste. Hexer switches to the Select tool if needed, and a preview of the copied hexes follows your pointer.

  • Press R or click Rotate to turn it by one hex side.
  • Press F or click Flip to mirror it.
  • Click to place it, or press Enter to place it under the pointer.
  • Esc or Cancel stops pasting.

On a touch screen, tap where the paste should go, tap again to move it, then tap Place.

A paste replaces the POIs and notes under the preview and the paths that lie fully inside it, and the terrain where the copy has terrain. Copied hexes without terrain leave the ground below them alone. Tokens are added next to any already there. A hex you paste over keeps its own fog and connections, and gains the copied ones.

Copy, cut, delete and paste can each be undone.

Across layers and scale levels

The copy stays available when you switch layer or scale level, so you can paste a village from the base map into a more detailed level, or, with Pro, a cave from one Underdark layer onto another. The copy keeps its size in hexes: ten hexes stay ten hexes, of whatever size the current level uses. See scale levels.

The copy is cleared when you open another map, so you cannot paste between maps. On a detailed level, a paste that would take the level past its hex limit is refused with a message.

What a paste skips

A paste leaves out hexes that would land off the map. On the free plan it also skips Pro terrain, Pro POIs, connections made with the Connection tool, tokens beyond your 3, and anything on a Pro layer. A message says what was left out.
