How It Works

One-click world creation

Pick a template, click generate, and a full world appears. Forests cluster, mountains form chains, coastlines follow natural contours. Adjust sliders for sea level, mountain density, temperature, and moisture — or just hit generate and go.

Noise-based biome rules

Multi-layer simplex noise creates elevation, moisture, and temperature maps. Biome rules determine terrain: high + dry + cold = tundra, low + wet + warm = swamp. Ridge noise forms mountain chains. Edge falloff carves coastlines.

All 35 terrain types free

Forests, mountains, deserts, oceans, tundra, swamps, and more — every terrain type is free forever. Plus 18 hex features for settlements, dungeons, and sacred sites. Pro unlocks 55+ premium features and Underdark terrain.

Rivers, roads & settlements

Rivers carve from highlands to sea. Roads connect settlements along efficient routes. Trails wind through wilderness. Everything follows the terrain — the result feels designed, not random.

Refine by hand

Generation is a starting point. Switch to the paint tool and refine every hex. Add quest locations, rename regions, draw paths, place DM notes. Let the algorithm handle geography while you focus on story.

Try it — pick a terrain and drag to paint.

Hex map terrain painting

Three templates. Every map unique.

Island Kingdom — ocean-surrounded landmass with coastlines, forests, mountains, and settlements. Perfect for seafaring campaigns.

Continental — frozen tundra in the north through temperate forests to scorching deserts in the south. Ideal for overland campaigns.

Underdark Caves — subterranean caverns with mushroom forests, crystal veins, lava flows, and tunnels. Learn about Underdark layers →

Frequently Asked Questions

How does procedural hex map generation work?

Hexer uses multi-layer simplex noise to generate elevation, moisture, and temperature values for each hex. Biome rules then assign terrain types based on these values — high elevation becomes mountains, low elevation with high moisture becomes swamps, and so on. Rivers flow downhill, roads connect settlements, and the result is a believable world ready to explore.

Can I edit the map after generating it?

Absolutely. Generation is just a starting point. After generating, you can paint over any hex with 53 free hex types (35 terrain + 18 features), add paths, regions, notes, and more. The procedural generator gives you a foundation — you refine it into your world.

Is the hex map generator free?

Yes. Procedural world generation is available on the free tier with all three templates — Island Kingdom, Continental, and Underdark Caves. Free maps are limited to 20×15 hexes. Pro users can generate maps up to 200×200 with additional cave generation features.

What templates are available for world generation?

Hexer includes three generation templates: Island Kingdom (ocean-surrounded landmass with forests, mountains, and coastlines), Continental (full continent with tundra, forests, plains, and deserts from north to south), and Underdark Caves (subterranean caverns with mushroom forests, crystal veins, and lava flows). Each template uses different noise parameters, and every seed produces a unique map.
