More than just colors.

Movement costs — every terrain type has a movement cost that affects travel route calculations. Plains cost 1, forests 1.5, mountains 3. Roads reduce cost further. Your players' journey time is terrain-aware.

Vision modifiers — terrain affects fog of war vision radius. Dense forests block sight. Mountaintops extend it. Open plains give full range. All configurable per hex type.

Procedural generation — Hexer's world generator uses the whole palette where the land calls for it: glaciers in the cold, marshes and deltas where rivers slow, farmland around towns, reefs and fjords along the coast.

Custom hex types — create your own terrain types on any tier, with their own name and color, based on an existing terrain. Build hex types specific to your world: "Blighted Marsh", "Dragon's Waste", "Fey-Touched Forest".

Select and reuse — paint over a block of hexes with the Select tool, then copy, cut, or delete them. Paste the block anywhere you can already paint, on any layer or scale level your plan reaches, and rotate or mirror it before you drop it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many terrain types does Hexer have?

189 terrain and feature types in total: 145 fantasy types, from forests and fjords to temples, ruins and Underdark holds, plus 44 sci-fi types for space and star maps. Each has its own color and icon. All 41 land and water terrain types and 38 map features are free forever; Pro adds 45 more features and 21 Underdark terrain types.

Can I create custom terrain types?

Yes, on every tier. Give a custom hex type its own name and color and base it on an existing terrain, whose icon it takes. Custom types are saved per map. Basing one on a Pro terrain needs Pro.

Do terrain types affect gameplay?

Each terrain type has a movement cost that affects travel route calculations and dynamic vision range. Dense forests slow movement and reduce sight. Mountains block vision. Roads speed up travel. All values are configurable.

What icons are available?

Every terrain and feature has its own icon, drawn from the game-icons.net library: trees, mountains, castles, skulls, mushrooms, crystals, and more.
