A space hexcrawl sector map built in Hexer with planets, nebulae, stations, and cyan jump routes connecting star systems

Paint your sector — don't just roll one

Most sci-fi sector map makers roll random stars and tables. Hexer is a visual sector map editor: you paint exactly the star map you want, hex by hex. Drop nebulae, asteroid fields, ion storms, anomalies, stars, planets, stations, derelicts, and warp gates wherever your story needs them.

Run a space hexcrawl: jump routes, travel time, fog of war

Turn your sector into a playable space hexcrawl. Plot jump routes between systems with the point crawl network — each link tracks travel time, so players can plan fuel and weeks-in-transit at a glance.

Fog of war keeps unexplored space dark until your players jump there, revealing the sector as the campaign unfolds.

Share a live link and your table sees the sector update in real time, party marker and all — no screen-sharing required.

Built for your favorite sci-fi RPG

Hexer is system-agnostic. The hex sector format, jump-route point crawl, and DM notes work for whatever you run at the table:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the sci-fi hex map maker free?

Yes — Hexer is free to start, no account required. You can paint a space sector with the free sci-fi tiles, plot jump routes, and export right away. A Pro plan unlocks the full tile set, larger maps, fog of war, and unlimited saved maps.

Can I use it for Traveller, Stars Without Number, or Ironsworn: Starforged?

Absolutely. Hexer is system-agnostic — the hex sector format, jump-route point crawl, and notes work for Traveller subsectors, Stars Without Number sectors, Ironsworn: Starforged, Mothership, Scum and Villainy, Cepheus Engine, Starfinder, and any sci-fi RPG you run. Hexer is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by those publishers.

How is this different from a sector generator?

Most sci-fi sector tools roll random stars and tables. Hexer is a visual editor — you paint exactly the sector you want, hex by hex, with nebulae, asteroid fields, stars, planets, stations, and warp gates. You stay in control of the map instead of re-rolling until it fits your story.

Can my players explore the sector live?

Yes. Share a live link and your players see the sector update in real time, with their party marker on the map. Fog of war hides unexplored space until they jump there, so the map reveals as the campaign unfolds.

Can I export my space maps to Foundry VTT?

Yes. Every map exports to PNG, SVG, and Universal VTT (.dd2vtt) for Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, and other virtual tabletops — so your hand-painted sector drops straight into your VTT of choice.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Hexer runs entirely in your browser on desktop, tablet, and phone. There is nothing to download or install — open the editor and start mapping.
