The Region tool (R) groups hexes into a named region, drawn as a coloured area with a border and a label. A region does not change the terrain underneath. Regions are free on every plan, and the tool works in every view, including Point. On a phone it is under More tools.
Create a region
Click New Region in the sidebar. Hexer gives it a name and the next unused colour, and selects it so you can paint.
Click or drag across hexes to add them, or tap and drag on a touch screen. A stroke that starts on a hex already in the region removes hexes instead, so you can trim an edge with the same tool.
Size next to the panel title sets how many hexes one dab covers, as for the Brush; , and . change it too.
To stop painting, press Escape, right-click, or click Finish region. On a touch screen, press and hold on the map, or tap Finish region.
Select a region
Click a region’s row in the On this map list, or click one of its hexes on the map while no region is selected. Clicking a hex of a different region switches to that region rather than painting. A filter box appears in the list once there are more than eight regions.
Style and label
With a region selected, the Region settings card lets you:
- rename it
- apply a Quick style: Territory, Contested, Hazard, Wild / Unclaimed, Special or Realm
- under Customize, pick a colour, a border width (1 to 4) and style (solid, dashed or dotted), the fill opacity (0 to 50%), whether the label shows, and how large it is
To move the label, drag it on the map with the Region tool.
Clear hexes empties the region but keeps it; Hexer asks first. To remove the region itself, use the delete button on its row, or press and hold the row on a touch screen.
Regions and scale levels
The sidebar lists the regions of the layer and scale level you are on. A region made on the base level also shows, fainter, on the more detailed levels, but you edit it on the level where you made it. See scale levels.
What players see
Regions are drawn under the fog of war. A region’s name is drawn once, at its centre, so players can read it whenever that centre hex is not Hidden, even if most of the region is. Region data also reaches your players’ browsers whatever the fog, so do not rely on fog to keep a region’s name secret. The Regions option in the Share dialog stops regions from being drawn for players.
With dynamic vision on, the Vision tool can reveal a whole region at once.
