Pan tool and moving around the map

Basics

The Pan tool (H) turns a plain left-drag, or a one-finger drag on a touch screen, into moving the map. It has no settings of its own, and you rarely need it with a mouse: scrolling, the middle button, Space-drag, the keyboard and two-finger gestures all move the map whatever tool is selected.

When you open a map that already exists, and whenever you use a phone or tablet, the editor starts on the Pan tool, so your first drag moves the map instead of painting over it. Pick the Brush or any other tool when you are ready to edit. If a tool other than the Brush is active at that moment, Hexer leaves it alone. On a phone, Pan sits under More tools in the bottom toolbar.

With a mouse

  • Zoom: scroll. The first time you scroll, Hexer asks whether the wheel should zoom or pan. You can change your answer under View > Scroll Wheel. Holding Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) while scrolling, or pinching on a trackpad, always zooms.
  • Pan: drag with the middle button, or hold Space and drag with the left button. A right-drag pans too, except with the Path, Region, POI, Travel and Point Crawl tools, which use right-click for their own menus.
  • With the Pan tool, a plain left-drag pans.

With a keyboard

  • Arrow keys pan the map. Hold Shift to move further with each press.
  • + and - zoom in and out.
  • 0 fits everything painted on the current layer into view.
  • Ctrl + 0 (Cmd + 0) resets the view.
  • ? lists every keyboard shortcut.

On a touch screen

Pinch with two fingers to zoom and drag with two fingers to pan. This works with every tool. What a one-finger drag does depends on the tool: with Pan it moves the map, and with the Brush it paints.

The zoom controls

The buttons at the bottom of the map zoom out, zoom in, and show the current zoom. Click or tap the percentage to reset the view.

Scale levels

If your map has scale levels, a pill next to the percentage names the level you are on. Zooming in far enough moves you to the more detailed level, and zooming out takes you back. Click or tap the pill to pick a level from a list; a level your plan does not include shows a lock and opens the upgrade dialog.

On a detailed level, the percentage first returns you to that level’s starting zoom. Click it twice in quick succession to go back to the whole map.

If you lose the map

You can pan as far as you like, including right off the edge of the map. Press 0 to bring the painted area back into view, or click or tap the zoom percentage.
