The Note tool (N) pins notes to hexes: session prep, secrets, encounter details or anything else you want to find on the map. Notes are free on every plan, and the tool works in every view, including Point.
Add a note
Click or tap a hex. A new note opens straight away: give it a title and write the text below. Each click adds another note, so one hex can hold several.
Save keeps the note, and so does the close button in the corner. Cancel or Escape on a new note throws it away; on an existing note it drops your changes.
Open, move and find notes
A hex with notes shows a small pip. This works with any tool selected:
- With a mouse: point at the pip to fan out its notes, click one to open it, or click the pip to open every note on that hex. Right-click a pip that holds one note to edit it.
- On a touch screen: tap the pip to fan out its notes, then tap one to open it.
- To move a note: drag its pip to another hex. When the hex holds several notes, drag the one you want out of the fan instead.
The note list
With the Note tool selected, the sidebar lists the notes on your current layer and scale level, grouped by hex. A count at the bottom tells you how many notes sit on other scale levels.
- Search matches titles and text.
- The category buttons (Landmark, Encounter, Settlement, Dungeon, Secret, Hazard, Resource and Custom) filter the list; All shows every note.
- Click a note to jump to it and open it. The pencil button opens it for editing, and the cross deletes it straight away; undo brings it back.
- A DM badge marks a note your players never see.
Who can read a note
Open Settings at the bottom of the note to set its category and its Player Visibility:
| Option | Players see the note |
|---|---|
| Always Visible | Always, even over fog |
| DM Only | Never |
| Discovered by Fog | Once its hex is not Hidden (Terrain-only counts), or while the party can see it |
| Line of Sight Only | Only while the party can see its hex |
The last two depend on fog of war and dynamic vision, which are Pro. Without dynamic vision, a Line of Sight Only note never shows. A DM Only note is never sent to your players’ browsers at all, so it is the one to use for a secret. See fog of war.
To check the result, switch DM View to Player View in the View menu. The Notes option in the Share dialog stops notes from being drawn for players, but only DM Only keeps a note’s text off their devices.
Settings is also where you delete a note from inside the editor.
