Tokens are pieces that move: the party, an army, a band of monsters, a fleet. Several can share one hex. Pick the Token tool (M). It is available in the Hex and Combined views, not in Point.
Place, move and edit
Click an empty hex to place a token. Its editor opens straight away: give it a name, a color and an icon. On a space map, the icons are fleets, ships and alien threats instead of armies and cavalry. If you press Cancel or Esc on a new token, it is removed again.
Drag a token to move it. You do not need the Token tool for that: with the Brush, Eraser, Region, Vision or Select tool, a drag that starts on a token moves the token, and a plain click still does what that tool does.
A token’s name never appears on the map. With a mouse, hover over a token to see it, and click it to open its editor. The sidebar lists the tokens on the current layer; click one to jump to it.
On a touch screen, tap an empty hex to place a token and drag a token to move it. Tapping a token fans out the names of every token on that hex; tap a name to open its editor. Six tokens show around a hex; on a crowded hex the rest collapse into a “+N” chip, which fans them out the same way.
What players see
Player visibility in the editor decides whether a token appears in the player view:
| Setting | Players see the token |
|---|---|
| Visible | Always, even on hexes they have not uncovered |
| In sight | Only while the party marker can see its hex (Pro) |
| DM only | Never |
With dynamic vision off, an In sight token stays hidden from players. See how fog of war works.
Moveable by: Anyone lets players drag that token in the shared view, as long as they can see it. Players only see tokens when Tokens is on in the Share dialog. See sharing with players.
The party marker
Any token can be the party marker: click Make this the party marker in its editor and save. The party marker is what dynamic vision sees from (see the Vision tool). A map has one; choosing another token moves the role, and the sidebar marks it PARTY. Whether players see it is set by Party Marker in the Share dialog, not by Tokens. The same section of the dialog decides whether players may move it.
Tokens and scale levels
A token appears on every scale level, and you can drag it on any of them. Dragged on the base map, it keeps its spot within the hex, so it does not jump to the middle of that hex on a detailed level. See scale levels.
Free plan limit
The free plan allows 3 tokens per map, and the party marker counts as one of them. The counter at the bottom of the sidebar list shows how many you have used. If you already have 3 tokens, make one of them the party marker. Set Party Here on a point-crawl location would add a fourth, so it shows a lock and opens the upgrade window instead. Pro has no limit.
