The palette
POI types are grouped by kind: Settlements, Fortifications, Sacred, Dungeons, Infrastructure, Resources, Wilds, Special and Underdark Features on a fantasy map, and Stellar Bodies, Stations, Hazards & Ruins and Jump Network on a space map. Show all themes lists the other theme’s types as well. Special and Infrastructure start folded; click a group’s heading to open it.
On a fantasy map, Resources and Wilds are entirely free, Special is entirely Pro, and the other groups mix both. On the free plan, Pro types show a lock and sit after the free types in their group, and choosing one opens the upgrade dialog.
Each type has one fixed icon. There is no separate icon or colour to choose per POI; the name is what makes each one yours.
Favourites and recent picks
Star a type to put it in the Fav row at the top of the palette. With a mouse the star appears when you point at a type; on a touch screen it is always shown. POI favourites are a separate list from terrain favourites.
- Signed in: favourites are saved to your account and follow you to every device.
- As a guest: they are kept in this browser, and added to your account when you sign in.
The Recent row shows the last eight types you picked. It is kept in this browser only.
With the POI tool selected, you can also take a type from the map: middle-click a POI. On a phone or tablet, tap the eyedropper below the search box, then tap a POI.
One icon per hex
A hex shows one icon. When a POI stands on it, the POI’s icon replaces the terrain icon, while the terrain colour stays. When fog hides a POI from your players, they see the terrain icon in its place, so the hex looks like any other.
Zoomed far out, icons too small to make out are left off and come back as you zoom in.
Why a name is missing
Names are part of the map, so they grow as you zoom in, and each one fades in once it is large enough to read. Where two names overlap, the larger one is shown and the other is hidden. Because both names grow together, zooming in does not pull them apart: make the hidden name larger, or move one of the two POIs. A hidden name is never deleted.
The type sets a name’s starting size. Cities, castles, temples and fortresses get large names; hamlets, outposts, farms, camps, ruins and tombs get small ones. A larger name appears sooner as you zoom in, and wins when it overlaps a smaller one.
To see why a particular name is missing, right-click its POI, or hold it on a touch screen. Under Label Size, the menu says whether the name is hidden behind another one (and which) or too small at this zoom. Drag the slider to make that one name larger. To resize every name on the map at once, use Label Size under View > Settings > Canvas.
