Tips

Pick terrain or a POI off the map

With the Brush, middle-click a hex to paint with its terrain. With the POI tool, middle-click a point of interest to place more of that type. On a phone or tablet, tap the eyedropper below the search box in the terrain or POI palette, then tap a hex or a POI. See the Brush tool.

Favourites and recent picks

Star a terrain or a POI type to pin it to the Fav row at the top of its palette. The Recent row keeps your last eight picks. When you’re signed in, favourites follow your account to other devices; recent picks stay in the browser. See POI icons and favourites.

Choose what the scroll wheel does

The first time you scroll, Hexer asks whether the wheel should zoom or pan. To change it, use View > Scroll Wheel. See the Pan tool.

Trace over an image

Under Settings > Layers, switch on Trace Image Overlay and choose an image, such as a scan of a hand-drawn map. Set its opacity, size and position, and paint hexes over it. Shift + T hides or shows it. Only you see it: it is kept in this browser, not saved with the map, and never appears in the shared view.

A share link can’t be switched off, but its password can be changed. Everyone who unlocked the map with the old password has to enter the new one the next time they open it. See sharing with players.

DM Only means only you

A note has four visibility settings, and three of them can show it to players: always, once the fog lifts, or while the party can see the hex. DM Only never shows it on the shared map. It is also the only one that is never sent to your players’ browsers, so a note with a real spoiler belongs in DM Only until the party finds it. See the Note tool.

Foundry’s hex grid in one click

With Universal VTT selected in the Export dialog, Copy Foundry macro gives you a macro that sets the imported scene’s grid type for you. See exporting to Foundry VTT.
