Before your first save
A map that has never been saved lives only in this browser. Hexer backs it up about ten seconds after your last change, and the next time you open the editor, it asks whether to Restore that map or Discard it.
That backup belongs to this browser on this device. It does not follow you to another device, and clearing the browser’s site data deletes it.
This is also true when you are signed in: a new map is not in your account until you save it.
Saving to your account
Use File > Save, or press Ctrl + S (Cmd + S on a Mac). As a guest, Save asks you to create a free account, and after you sign up, the map is saved to it for you. When you are already signed in, the first save asks for a name.
From then on, every change saves by itself about two seconds after you stop, and again when you switch to another tab. Ctrl + S saves straight away.
The save status
On a computer, the bottom-right corner of the editor shows where your map stands:
- Not saved yet: the map is only in this browser. Save it to keep it.
- All changes saved: your account has the latest version.
- Unsaved changes: an automatic save is about to run.
- Saving…: a save is running.
- Save failed: see the next section.
When a save fails
A red banner explains what went wrong. Until the problem is solved, your changes are kept in this browser, so do not clear its site data. Use Retry now after a connection problem, or sign in again if your session ended. If you close the tab before the save goes through, Hexer picks up the local copy the next time you open the map. When the map was also changed somewhere else in the meantime, it asks you which version to keep.
Your saved maps
Your saved maps are listed on the Dashboard. On a computer, My Maps in the account menu lists them too. The free plan keeps one map in your account and Pro keeps as many as you like. On the free plan, saving a second map opens the upgrade dialog instead.
For a copy on your own disk, use File > Export and choose JSON. File > Import opens that file again as a new map, which you then save like any other.
