The first time you open the editor, Hexer generates a small starter continent for you to try things on — there is nothing to create first.
Paint terrain
Pick the Brush tool (the paintbrush icon in the toolbar, or press B), then choose a terrain from the palette. On a mouse, click and drag across hexes to paint. On a touch screen, tap or drag a finger across hexes.
The Size control next to the brush paints more than one hex at once. On a mouse, click a number from 1 to 5, or step it with , and .. On touch, use the stepper next to it.
Undo and redo
Press Ctrl + Z (Cmd + Z on a Mac) to undo, and Ctrl + Shift + Z to redo. On a phone or tablet, use the Undo and Redo buttons that appear once there is something to undo — they sit at the bottom of the toolbar.
Undo takes back changes to the map itself, such as painting, paths, regions and notes, and also resizing the map. Display settings, such as theme, hex size and label size, and the map’s name stay as you left them.
Pan and zoom
Scroll to zoom and drag with the mouse to pan. On a touch screen, pinch with two fingers to zoom and drag with two fingers to pan; a one-finger drag paints instead.
Mark a point of interest
Beyond terrain, the POI tool (F) drops a marker for a town, a dungeon entrance, or anything else worth naming. Select one from the palette, then click or tap a hex to place it. On touch, hold a placed marker to open its menu.
Saving your work
As a guest, your map saves automatically in this browser as you work — there is nothing to click. To keep it permanently and open it from another device, use File > Save (Ctrl + S, or Cmd + S on a Mac): as a guest, it asks you to create a free account and then saves the map to it. From that first save on, edits save automatically a few seconds after you stop. A new map you start while signed in also needs that first save.
How big your map can be
A free map can be up to 40×30 hexes, the same size as the one you started on. Upgrading to Pro raises that to 200×200 and unlocks the Underdark layers, fog of war and unlimited maps.
