Reusing parts of your map

Tips

Don’t paint a mountain range, a town block or a dungeon room twice. The Select tool (S) copies a patch of hexes and pastes it anywhere on the same map.

Copy it

Drag over the hexes you want; every drag adds to the selection. Hold Alt while dragging, or switch the panel to Remove, to take hexes out again. Then press Ctrl + C (Cmd + C on a Mac) or click Copy.

Turn it, flip it, place it

Press Ctrl + V or click Paste. A preview follows the cursor. R turns it a sixth of a turn clockwise, F flips it, and a click places it. Esc cancels. On a phone or tablet, tap Paste, tap where it goes, then tap Place.

What comes along

Copied Left behind
Terrain, including custom colours and icons Regions and fog
Walls on hexes with terrain of their own Connections that leave the area
Points of interest and their names The party marker
Notes and tokens Paths that leave the area
Paths and rivers that lie completely inside the area
Connections between two copied hexes

A paste replaces the points of interest, notes and paths already under it, so pasting over an earlier paste leaves one copy. Tokens are added, never replaced.

Moving an area

Cut copies and then clears the original, and both Cut and Delete also remove every connection that starts or ends on the cleared hexes. The connections between two of the cut hexes come back with the paste, so a moved dungeon keeps the stairs and portals inside it. Connections that led out of the area, such as stairs down to another layer, stay removed: re-link them with the Connection tool afterwards. The cleared hexes keep their fog.

Another layer or another scale level

The copy stays on the clipboard when you change layer or scale level.

A paste covers the same number of hexes it was copied from, so a mountain range copied on the base map and pasted on a detail level keeps its shape but covers far less ground. On a detail level, only terrain painted on that level is copied. A hex that just shows the terrain of the larger hex above it copies as empty ground, and pasting it leaves the terrain underneath alone.

Limits

Copy and paste work within one map. On the free plan, a paste skips Pro terrain, Pro points of interest and connections made with the Connection tool, skips everything on any layer below the surface, and stops adding tokens at the free limit. Hexes that would land off the map are skipped too, and a short message says what was left out.
