Hiding the terrain icons

Tips

Most terrains draw a small symbol in their hex, such as trees in a forest. To fade those symbols or hide them completely, change the map’s Terrain Icon Opacity.

Change the opacity

  1. Open View → Settings. On a phone, tap the Menu button (three lines) and then Settings.
  2. Choose Canvas. On a phone held upright, tap Canvas in the list first.
  3. Drag Terrain Icon Opacity, or type a number in the box next to it.

At 0% the terrain icons disappear completely; at 100% they are drawn at full strength. A new map starts at 85%. The map updates when you let go of the slider.

What it changes

  • Only terrain icons. Point-of-interest icons keep their strength at any setting. A hex with a point of interest shows the POI’s icon instead of its terrain icon.
  • This map only. The value is saved with the map, so each map keeps its own.
  • Your players see it too. The shared player view uses the same value once the map has saved. Where terrain-only fog hides a point of interest from players, they see the hex’s terrain icon in its place, at your chosen opacity.
  • Exports follow it. PNG and SVG exports draw terrain icons at the same opacity.

To restore the default, set the slider to 85% again.

Hiding icons for one terrain only

There is no switch to hide the icon of a single hex or a single terrain. If you want one terrain to show no symbol, make a custom terrain without a base: a custom type with no Based on terrain is a flat colour with no icon. It costs something: it does not blend into its neighbours, travel treats it like plains, and hexes already painted with the old terrain need painting again.

Icons that vanish when you zoom out

When you zoom far out, Hexer stops drawing icons that would be too small to read, whatever the slider says. Zoom back in and they return.
