How to credit icons and generated text

In depth

You never have to credit Hexer for a map you publish. The credits below are for third-party material an export can contain. Put them wherever credits usually go in your work: a credits page, the back of a book, a product listing, or a video description. Why these credits come up at all is covered in Can I use my maps commercially?.

Icons

Needed when a PNG, SVG or Universal VTT export shows any icon — a terrain symbol, a point of interest, or a token or note icon. JSON and Hex Key exports contain no icon artwork.

The icons come from Game Icons, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY 3.0), which asks you to credit the authors and name the license. This line does both:

Map icons from Game Icons (https://game-icons.net) by Lorc, Delapouite and other contributors, licensed under CC BY 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/).

Every icon has its own author. If you want to name the authors of the icons your map uses, game-icons.net/about.html lists them all.

Generated names and notes

Only a map made with Generate contains generated notes, the ones under its settlements and sites. The starter map a first visit opens with has none. Hexer also names places without Generate, such as the starter map’s settlements, but names never need a credit (see below), and neither does anything you painted or wrote yourself.

Creative Commons Attribution: when you publish generated notes

The notes draw on these works. Their licenses ask for a credit whenever you share their material, including material you have changed. A map does not record which work a note drew on, so if you publish generated notes, include all four:

If you publish only the names and none of the notes, these credits are not needed.

MIT: no credit needed for names

Some generated names come from a syllable-based name generator ported from one project and fed name lists from another, both under the MIT License; the rest come from Hexer’s own name generator. The MIT License asks for its notice in copies of the software or substantial portions of it. A generated name is neither, so a published map or book needs no credit for it. The two projects are listed for completeness:

  • Name bases from Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator, MIT License, Copyright 2017-2024 Max Haniyeu (Azgaar), azgaar.fmg@yandex.com.
  • Naming language model ported from mewo2/naming-language by Martin O’Leary, MIT License, Copyright (c) 2016: Martin O’Leary.

CC0: no credit needed

Some notes pick words from a public-domain collection. CC0 waives copyright, so no credit is required. For completeness:

  • Word lists from dariusk/corpora, CC0.

This page explains the licenses in plain terms; it is not legal advice.
