Open File → Export (on a phone: Menu → File → Export). Every format is free, and you do not need an account.
Pick a format
- PNG Image: a picture of the map, for sharing, printing or a VTT background. Choose 1x, 2x or 4x resolution; the dialog shows the size in pixels before you export.
- SVG Vector: the same picture as a vector file that stays sharp at any zoom. Hex coordinates are included when View → Coordinates is on.
- Universal VTT: a scene file for Foundry VTT and other virtual tabletops, with the image, the grid size and walls. See Exporting to Foundry VTT.
- Hex Key (MD): a printable Markdown document of your notes, named places and tokens, grouped by coordinate, region or category.
- JSON Data: the map’s data. It is the only format Hexer can read back, with File → Import. It is not a full backup: it leaves out the player journal, and an import opens as a new, unsaved map. Saving it creates a new map, so on the free plan you would first have to delete the original.
Which part of the map is exported
PNG, SVG, Universal VTT and Hex Key export the layer you are working on; the dialog names it. If layers are turned on for your map, All Layers (.zip) exports one file per layer that has painted hexes. JSON always holds every layer.
If your map has scale levels, a Scale Level menu appears. It starts on the base level, not the level you are looking at, so pick the detail level you want before exporting.
DM copy or player copy
PNG and SVG have a DM View / Player View switch. The player view leaves out DM-only notes and secret point-crawl locations you have not revealed, point-crawl locations with Visible to Players switched off, and with the dialog’s Fog box ticked it covers fogged areas the way players see them, so it is safe to hand out.
For the Hex Key, untick Include DM notes to get the player version. It drops more than notes: places on hexes that fog hides and tokens players may not see are left out too. From the point crawl, it leaves out the same locations as the image exports: DM locations and routes, Secret locations you have not revealed, and locations with Visible to Players switched off, along with their routes.
Very large maps
Size limits count the hexes of the level you export, and a detail level has many more hexes than the base map. A PNG resolution that would make too large an image is greyed out, with a note saying why, and the dialog suggests SVG, which has no pixel limit. SVG itself stops at 40,000 hexes.
The watermark
On the free plan, PNG, SVG and Universal VTT images carry a small “Made with Hexer” mark in the corner, and the Hex Key ends with a “Generated with Hexer” line. Pro exports carry neither. See also Can I use my maps commercially?.
